Empowering children to read and write with confidence
I’m Jane Rowlands, founder of The Literacy Space, and I provide expert structured literacy tutoring for students of all ages in the Greater Victoria area.
You're likely here because you've noticed your child struggling with reading or writing, or perhaps they've received a diagnosis of dyslexia or a learning disability. It can be incredibly worrying to see your child lose confidence or avoid school, and you might feel unsure how to provide the right support.
If this resonates with you, rest assured you've found a partner who understands. Many families feel this way, and together, we can build a strong foundation for your child's literacy success.
I'm Jane Rowlands, an Orton Gillingham Practitioner and experienced special education teacher dedicated to helping students of all ages achieve their full literacy potential.
My Why
My journey into structured literacy began over 15 years ago in the classroom, where I witnessed firsthand the struggles many students faced with reading and writing. This ignited a passion to learn the most effective, research-based methods to truly make a difference. Becoming an Orton Gillingham Practitioner three years ago was a pivotal step, allowing me to focus solely on this incredibly valuable and needed work. Seeing children transform into confident readers after struggling is profoundly rewarding.
I am an Orton Gillingham Practitioner Associate and also a proud member of the OG Canada Academy. With a degree in Special Education and extensive experience as a qualified special education teacher, I have worked with a diverse range of students, including those with ASD, ADHD, cognitive delays, and hearing loss, equipping me with a deep understanding of varied learning profiles.

What It’s Like to Work With Me
My approach is rooted in the belief that every child deserves to experience success and joy in learning. I combine the proven effectiveness of the Orton Gillingham method with a therapeutic, fun, and encouraging space. I believe in tailoring every lesson to your child’s individual needs, pace, strengths, and interests, ensuring that the whole child is at the center of our work.
I believe that small, consistent changes lead to the biggest transformations.
When I'm not helping children unlock their literacy potential, you can find me enjoying walks with our very large Bernese Mountain dog, Harry, and relaxing with our fluffy cat, Noodles.
I'm originally from the UK and moved to Canada in 2000, and I'm a proud parent of three "big" kids aged 20, 18, and 15!
